Diamondbacks pitcher Shelby Miller set for return after Tommy John surgery

PITTSBURGH — Shelby Miller is scheduled to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks‘ rotation Monday, 14 months after the right-hander underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Miller will face the Marlins in Miami. He rejoined the NL West-leading Diamondbacks before their game Thursday night against the Pirates after making four rehab starts in the minor leagues. “I’m pretty excited, but I’m assuming the first (start) back won’t be perfect,” Miller said. “There are going to be times where I’m going to have to bear down and get through some stuff.…

DALLAS — General managers looking to make moves at the NHL draft found out the salary cap for next season will be $79.5 million, an increase of $4.5 million from last year. The NHL and NHLPA announced the cap and $58.8 million salary floor Thursday. Lakers contact Spurs but have had no further dialogue about Kawhi Leonard

The Los Angeles Lakers contacted the San Antonio Spurs after Kawhi Leonard‘s public trade request last week but immediately felt the Spurs had no intention of engaging in any dialogue, sources close to the situation told ESPN. As one Lakers source put it, “They basically shut the door on us.” No players were discussed and, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday, there has been no further dialogue between the teams. Leonard has expressed a preference to be traded to Los Angeles, specifically the Lakers. All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard reportedly wants…

N.H.L. Is Expected to Bring Another Tkachuk Into the Fold

In just two seasons in the N.H.L., Matt Tkachuk, the Calgary Flames’ left winger, has earned a reputation as one of the league’s most skilled, and most annoying, agitators. Soon he will probably have competition in that category — from his younger brother. Brady Tkachuk, a bruising forward at Boston University, is expected to be the first American taken in the N.H.L. draft, which starts on Friday in Dallas. N.H.L. Central Scouting rated him second among North American skaters, and many mock drafts have him going as high as third…

New York launched eight homers in the sweep and tops baseball with 122 long balls. Giancarlo Stanton homered in the first two games of the series and almost…

An Oxymoron No More: The Great Brazilian Goalkeeper

By the time he established himself as Internacional’s undisputed starter, it was second nature. The circumstances were curious: the three goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order — including Dida — were all unavailable for a game against Fluminense, the club’s then-coach, Abel Braga, explained. “In a very difficult situation, Alisson came in, and was spectacular,” he said. “The next game, Dida was available again, but Alisson had shown so much personality, he stayed. We barely lost a game for the rest of the season.” He has not looked…

AUSTRALIA TOUR OF ENGLAND, 2018 Rob Johnston • Last updated on Fri, 22 Jun, 2018, 02:25 AM Australia have been very ordinary in the five-match series so far – and the 4-0 scoreline in England’s favour is a true reflection of their slump in the format © Getty England’s six-wicket victory over Australia at Emirates Riverside in Chester-le-Street consigned the men from Down Under to a ninth defeat from the last ten meetings between these two teams.
