Salary cap set at $79.5 million for 2018-19 NHL season

DALLAS — General managers looking to make moves at the NHL draft found out the salary cap for next season will be $79.5 million, an increase of $4.5 million from last year. The NHL and NHLPA announced the cap and $58.8 million salary floor Thursday. With the first round of the draft Friday night, teams are preparing for a bevy of player movement entirely apart from the selections themselves. Edmonton GM Peter Chiarelli says there’s “a lot of chatter” going on right now. Much of that chatter involves some big…

N.H.L. Is Expected to Bring Another Tkachuk Into the Fold

In just two seasons in the N.H.L., Matt Tkachuk, the Calgary Flames’ left winger, has earned a reputation as one of the league’s most skilled, and most annoying, agitators. Soon he will probably have competition in that category — from his younger brother. Brady Tkachuk, a bruising forward at Boston University, is expected to be the first American taken in the N.H.L. draft, which starts on Friday in Dallas. N.H.L. Central Scouting rated him second among North American skaters, and many mock drafts have him going as high as third…

Johnny Gaudreau, of Calgary Flames, buys stake in USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints

“Johnny Hockey” is getting an additional title: part owner. Barry Trotz, former coach of the Stanley Cup-champion Washington Capitals, has been named the new coach of the New York Islanders. Taylor Hall of the New Jersey Devils barely edged Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon for the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night, winning the NHL MVP race by less than 100 points in the voting. 1 Related Calgary Flames star forward Johnny Gaudreau is a member of an NHL-laden ownership group that purchased an equity stake in the U.S. Hockey League’s Dubuque Fighting…

New York Islanders name Barry Trotz new head coach

DALLAS — The New York Islanders have hired Barry Trotz as their new head coach. President of hockey operations Lou Lamoriello announced the move Thursday at the NHL draft, two weeks after Trotz won the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals and three days after he resigned from that job. Trotz reportedly agreed to a five-year deal worth double what he would have made annually on a shorter contract with the Capitals. Hiring Trotz fresh off his Stanley Cup victory is another statement to face-of-the-franchise center John Tavares, who can…

2018 NHL draft – Wild cards, players who could be traded, most intriguing prospects and more

Who are you most excited to see at the next level? Chris Peters, hockey prospects analyst: Obviously I’m intrigued by Rasmus Dahlin — as everyone is — but there’s no doubt that defenseman Quinn Hughes has the highest potential for excitement. I’ve just not seen anyone that plays the game quite like him before. His size (listed at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds) may concern some, but he’s one of the most agile skaters I’ve seen at his age, and I think the best is yet to come. I’m not sure how…

Revealing our awards ballots for Hart Trophy, Norris Trophy, Calder Trophy and more

10:15 PM ET Emily Kaplan Greg Wyshynski Being an NHL Awards voter is a bit like playing God, if God were less interested in running the totality of the universe than in the zone-start ratios of defensive forwards. Also if God knew there were more than 100 other gods whose opinions carried just as much weight and who therefore could invalidate any and all declarations or decisions with majority rule. But the whole “defining guidelines through one’s own dogma or philosophy rather than a literal reading” thing with the NHL…
